Lao Embassy in China Holds Tribute Ceremony for Late National Assembly President Xaysomphone Phomvihane

Beijing: The Embassy of the Lao PDR in the People's Republic of China held a tribute ceremony in Beijing on August 10, 2026, to mourn the passing of Xaysomphone Phomvihane, Member of the Politburo of the Party Central Committee and President of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR.

According to Lao News Agency, the ceremony was attended by Somphone Sichaleun, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao PDR to China, along with embassy officials and staff, their families, Lao officials working in China, and Lao students. The event provided an opportunity for those present to express their respect and appreciation for Mr. Xaysomphone and his contributions to the Party, State, and people of Laos.

Throughout his career, Mr. Xaysomphone devoted his knowledge, experience, and strength to national protection and development. He held senior positions in the Party and State, including President of the National Assembly, and contributed to legislative affairs and the development of the National Assembly.

Mr. Xaysomphone was born on December 12, 1956, and passed away at 11:18 a.m. on August 8, 2026, at the age of 70, following a severe vasculitis disease. His passing is a loss to the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the State, and the multi-ethnic Lao people.

The tribute ceremony in Beijing was held in accordance with the national mourning period and reflected the respect and affection of Lao citizens living, working, and studying in China for the late senior Party and State leader.
