Vientiane: The Traffic Police Department of the Ministry of Public Security has announced heightened road safety measures ahead of year-end and International New Year 2026 celebrations.

According to Lao News Agency, Colonel Khamson Sidavong, Head of the Traffic Police Department, revealed at a press conference that officers will increase patrols and checkpoints at key locations. These include expressway entry and exit points, Sikeut Junction, Road No. 10, Road 13 South in Tha Phabath District, and special economic zones. Efforts are in place to enhance coordination with provincial authorities and the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols. Drivers are urged to be well-rested, carry valid documents, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition. Motorcycle riders and passengers are required to wear helmets, and overloading is strictly prohibited. Additionally, seatbelts are mandatory for car occupants, and long-distance buses must have a reserve driver.

Speed limits will be enforced rigorously, with expressways capped at 120 kilometers per hour and a minimum of 80 kilometers per hour. Drivers on other roads are expected to follow posted signs and adjust their speed according to road conditions.

For minor violations, police will issue warnings, while serious or repeated offenses could result in fines or the seizure of documents.

Officials have also called upon parents, village leaders, and organizations to contribute to road safety education, particularly targeting young people and staff. The goal is to reduce accidents and ensure a safe and peaceful holiday season.
