Lao PDR Hosts Second Workshop to Enhance Teacher Support Systems

Vientiane:The Ministry of Education and Sports of the Lao PDR (MoES), in collaboration with the Australian Government through the BEQUAL programme, is conducting the second 'Teacher support materials writing workshop' from October 19-23, 2026. This initiative aims to bolster the development of practical materials that will assist teachers in enhancing their classroom practices.

According to Lao News Agency, the workshop is focused on empowering teacher educators to create and refine support materials. This effort is part of a broader strategy to provide teachers with consistent guidance from experienced mentors, including lesson observations, co-teaching, and feedback sessions. Such interactions are designed to improve teaching methods and thereby enrich students' learning experiences.

The workshop is dedicated to addressing specific educational challenges prevalent in Lao PDR. Participants are tasked with developing content for an upcoming teacher support training scheduled for January 2027, concentrating on two key areas Multigrade Teaching and Lao Language and Literacy Development. These subjects are crucial for addressing classroom realities, such as teaching students from diverse grade levels and enhancing their proficiency in the Lao language.

Dr. Lamphoune Laungxay, Director General of the Department of Teacher Education and Administration Development (DTEAD), emphasized the importance of creating training materials that are practical and aligned with the realities faced by teachers in Lao PDR. The workshop encourages teacher education institutes to leverage their technical expertise and experience to develop sustainable content for ongoing professional development.

The workshop also provides a platform for educators from various institutes to collaborate, share experiences, and test different teaching activities. This collaborative approach aims to make the training materials more relevant and applicable to the needs of teachers in real-world school environments.

Michael Currie, First Secretary at the Australian Embassy, highlighted the significance of supporting teacher training teams in developing their own materials, noting that this fosters local expertise and ensures that educational support remains relevant and effective in meeting teachers' needs as educational priorities evolve.

This initiative marks a crucial step towards establishing a more sustainable and locally-led teacher continuing professional development system in Lao PDR, reinforcing the role of teacher education institutes as key technical partners in improving teaching quality nationwide.
