Health Walk Celebrates National Handicrafts Day in Laos, Promoting Sector Development

Vientiane:A health walk was organized to celebrate National Handicrafts Day and mark 25 years of sector development in Laos. The event was attended by notable figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Santiphab Phomvihane, Naly Sisoulith, spouse of the President and Chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the Lao Handicraft Association, as well as senior Party and government officials, diplomats, representatives from international organizations, handicraft producers, business operators, civil servants, association members, and students.

According to Lao News Agency, the walk aimed to promote public health while uniting people from various sectors to support the preservation, transmission, and promotion of Lao handicrafts, which are considered a vital part of the country's cultural heritage.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Malaithong Kommasith emphasized that Lao handicrafts are more than just commercial goods or decorative items; they reflect the identity, traditions, way of life, and accumulated knowledge of the Lao people. He highlighted that traditional craftsmanship is passed down through generations, with each product showcasing the skills, dedication, and creativity of local artisans. The handicraft sector contributes to economic development by creating jobs and generating income, particularly for women and rural communities, thereby helping to reduce poverty and improve living standards.

The past 25 years have seen continued development in the sector through government support, the efforts of artisans and businesses, and the work of the Lao Handicraft Association. Consumer and partner support, both domestically and internationally, has played a role in preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship.

Malaithong urged the public and various sectors to support Lao handicrafts by wearing traditional textiles and purchasing locally made products. He also underscored the need to improve product quality and value to enhance the sector's competitiveness in international markets, increase artisan incomes, and elevate the global profile of Lao handicrafts.

The celebration underscored the importance of safeguarding traditional knowledge, supporting local producers, and promoting handicrafts as both a symbol of national identity and a source of sustainable economic opportunities.
