Vientiane: The French Institute in Laos has initiated a cultural cycle dedicated to celebrating Lao intangible heritage, with a special focus on the khene, the traditional Laotian mouth organ. The event, which began on March 6th, is set to run until May 31, 2025, and promises a diverse array of free programming centered around this iconic instrument.

According to Lao News Agency, the opening evening was inaugurated by Ambassador of France Siv-Leng Chhuor and featured a lecture-concert by V©ronique de Laven¨re, a musicologist and lecturer-researcher at Sorbonne University. De Laven¨re, who played a key role in the recognition of Lao khene music by UNESCO in 2017, shared her expertise during the event. The evening was made possible through collaboration between the French Institute of Laos, the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, and Sorbonne University, bringing together experts and enthusiasts to delve into Lao musical heritage.

The event also showcased performances by khene players from various ethnic groups across Laos on the stage of the French Institute. For those unable to attend the opening, opportunities remain to explore the art of khene-making through video presentations and interactive exhibits at the media library, complete with multimedia content dedicated to this traditional music form.

The cultural cycle continues with a forthcoming event on Friday, March 21. Scheduled for 4 p.m., the public will have the chance to experience traditional music and dance by the Danexang company in the garden of the French Institute. This performance will be complemented by an artistic collaboration with Swiss graffiti artist Jinks Kunst, who will create a painting in real-time.

March 21 will also see the opening of the photographic exhibition "The Hands of the Master: The Expression of a Gesture" by Charlotte Andraca Tosseri. This exhibit offers a glimpse into the workshop of Vientiane's last remaining khene maker, Oudonsak, highlighting the beauty and intricacy of his craftsmanship through Tosseri's lens.

The evening will conclude with a concert by Wonwin, where the traditional sounds of the khene will harmonize with reggae rhythms. Looking ahead, on April 30th, the program will feature an exceptional concert for International Jazz Day. This event will showcase a unique performance by French saxophonist Didier Malherbe and khene player Khampha Inthisane, captured in 2009 by Peter Livermore during the recording of the music CD "Khaen and Saxo. down the Mekong."

Additionally, an immersive documentary directed by Peter Livermore will be presented, continuing the exploration of Lao heritage and highlighting the morlam genre and the voices of Laliane and the late Inteng Keobouala.
