Manila: The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Agriculture (DA) reported that prices of basic commodities at a wet market and supermarket in Manila are compliant with the suggested retail price (SRP) being implemented by the government. DTI Secretary Cristina Roque and DA Assistant Secretary Genevieve Guevarra visited Quinta Market in Quiapo to ensure vendors' compliance with the SRP and monitor the supply of basic necessities and prime commodities.
According to Philippines News Agency, Roque emphasized the importance of monitoring prices to ensure compliance with the SRP set by both the DA and DTI. The visit to Quinta Market revealed that prices of fish, pork, and poultry are satisfactory, with pork prices showing a significant decrease. This aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos's objective to make basic commodities affordable for consumers.
Roque noted, however, that vegetable prices are currently higher due to several factors, including recent storms that affected supply from the provinces and transportation costs. She expressed optimism that prices will decrease with the improvement in weather conditions.
Regarding rice prices, Roque acknowledged the difficulty in controlling prices, especially for imported rice, due to the fluctuating dollar value. Nevertheless, she pointed out that affordable options are available, supporting local farmers and offering consumers choices based on their budget.
Assistant Secretary Guevarra committed to investigating high rice prices, highlighting that the importation ban has not yet been implemented. She reminded vendors of the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for imported rice, stressing the need for compliance and the importance of identifying parties responsible for any price increases.
