Vietnam and Laos Enhance Cooperation to Combat Digital Misinformation

Hanoi:The Head of the Vietnamese Party Central Committee’s Commission for Publicity, Trinh Van Quyet, met with Sakhone Phommalath, the Deputy Head of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee’s Commission for Propaganda and Training. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in communications and ideological work, focusing on combating misinformation in the digital age.

According to Lao News Agency, both parties are facing challenges due to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and digital platforms, which are being used to spread fake news and distort information. This poses a significant threat to the ideological foundations of both countries’ parties and their bilateral relations.

Quyet emphasized the importance of conducting ideological work both online and offline and highlighted the need for faster digital transformation in the ideological and cultural sectors. He also informed the Lao delegation about Vietnam’s Resolution 25-NQ/TW, which outlines strategies for accurate situation assessments and rapid response to ideological issues. This strategy aims to engage the entire political system, particularly young people, and to build a culture resilient to online harmful content.

Plans to strengthen technical and cultural systems at all levels were also discussed, along with enhancing the delivery of official information. Quyet noted that 2027 would mark significant anniversaries in Vietnam-Laos relations and proposed drafting a 2027-2031 cooperation agreement to reinforce ties.

Sakhone shared that Laos has restructured its communications sector by integrating it into the commission, aiming for more effective advisory work to the Party Central Committee. The two commissions reviewed past cooperation and set priorities for future collaboration, including enhancing digital communications and countering misinformation.

He expressed hope that Vietnam’s experience will help Laos implement effective communication strategies and turn Party resolutions into practice. The meeting underscored the commitment of both nations to deepen their friendship and comprehensive partnership.
