According to Lao News Agency, Mr. Thongsalith held separate meetings with Ambassador Viant Vald©s and Silvano Merced, Rector of the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences in Havana. During the visit, Mr. Merced signed a cooperation agreement with Sinthavone Dalavong, Director General of the National University of Laos. The signing ceremony was attended by Ambassador Viant Vald©s, Marveris Sarmiento, Director of International Relations of the Cuban university, and other officials.
The agreement aims to facilitate the exchange of experience and technical knowledge in sports science, technology and innovation, human resource development, and exchanges involving students and academic staff. Both institutions plan to promote the development of faculty members, researchers, coaches, and athletes, while exploring joint scientific research and other academic activities.
Mr. Sinthavone emphasized the longstanding friendship between Laos and Cuba and expressed confidence that the agreement would lay the groundwork for practical and effective cooperation.
The Cuban delegation is also set to meet Lao graduates who studied in Cuba and visit sports-related institutions during their stay in Laos. Cooperation in sports between Laos and Cuba dates back to the early years following Laos’s independence in 1975, which included professional training and technical cooperation in sports and physical education. Cuban coaches have historically provided technical support to Lao athletes, contributing to their success in regional and international competitions, including three bronze medals at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
