Vientiane:The National Assembly of Laos has elected Sonexay Siphandone as the President of the National Assembly and Saleumxay Kommasith as the Prime Minister.
According to Lao News Agency, the proposal for Sonexay Siphandone was put forward by the National Assembly Standing Committee. He is a member of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee and represents Constituency No. 15 in Champasak Province. The proposal adhered to Article 57, Clause 5 of the 2015 amended Constitution, and Article 52, Clause 2 of the 2024 amended Law on the National Assembly, based on a suggestion from the President of the State on October 1, 2026.
The committee affirmed that Sonexay Siphandone possesses the necessary qualifications for the role, with extensive leadership experience and knowledge of the political, legal, economic, and administrative systems. He also has experience in guiding and overseeing the implementation of state laws and significant national decisions.
In addition, the National Assembly approved the appointment of Saleumxay Kommasith as Prime Minister. He is a member of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee and previously served as Deputy Prime Minister. The approval was unanimous, with all 158 National Assembly members present voting in favor.
These decisions were made during the second ordinary session of the 10th National Assembly, which is taking place in Vientiane from October 5-21.
