Hanoi: The Nam Theun 2 Power Company has temporarily halted electricity generation and water discharge from its hydropower plant to mitigate the risk of flooding in the Xe Bang Fai River. This decision comes in response to rising water levels following several days of continuous heavy rain.
According to Lao News Agency, a crucial meeting took place on August 9, 2026, at the Nam Theun 2 power plant located in Sangkhaeo Village, Yommalath District, Khammouane Province. This meeting was attended by provincial and district authorities from Yommalath and Mahaxay districts, village representatives, and technical experts from the company. Mr. Dusit Phommachan, the Director of the Nam Theun 2 Hydropower Plant, briefed attendees on the precautionary suspension aimed at preventing additional water from flowing into the already swollen Xe Bang Fai River.
The suspension measure is intended to protect the public and minimize potential adverse effects on downstream communities. Recent heavy rainfall has significantly increased natural inflows, causing the Xe Bang Fai River to reach its warning level and approach the flood level. This has raised concerns about potential impacts on communities and areas downstream.
The halt in water discharge began at midnight on August 7 and will continue until water levels recede to a safe point, allowing for the resumption of electricity generation. The company's decision aligns with its concession agreement, which mandates suspension of power generation when water levels hit specified thresholds or warning levels.
During the meeting, Mr. Dusit elaborated on the plant's operations, the reservoir's water-storage capacity upstream of the dam, water-management strategies, and the applicable safety standards. This temporary suspension underscores Nam Theun 2 Power Company's commitment to managing water levels safely, reducing further inflows into the Xe Bang Fai River, and minimizing risks to downstream communities during this period of heavy rainfall.
