Malaysia Marks 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations with Lao PDR Through Screening of ‘GAYONG’

Vientiane:Malaysia celebrated the 60th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with the Lao People's Democratic Republic through a cultural event that featured the screening of the film 'GAYONG'. The event was aimed at showcasing Malaysia's rich cultural heritage and was attended by dignitaries and guests who gathered to witness this cultural exchange.

According to Lao News Agency, the Ambassador of Malaysia to the Lao PDR, Ms. Norli Muadza Noor, welcomed the guests and emphasized the role of cultural exchanges in strengthening bilateral ties. She highlighted that over the past sixty years, Malaysia and Lao PDR have collaborated in various sectors, including trade, education, and tourism, and have actively pursued cultural diplomacy to deepen people-to-people connections.

The film 'GAYONG', inspired by the life of the late founder of Silat Gayong, a traditional Malay martial art, was set against the backdrop of the 1940s during World War II. It conveyed messages of courage, determination, and patriotism, while also promoting core Malaysian values such as discipline and respect, which are integral to the country's cultural legacy.

Ambassador Norli expressed hope that the film would provide Lao audiences with a greater understanding of Malaysian history and culture. She noted that despite linguistic and cultural differences, Malaysia and Lao PDR share values such as respect for elders and strong community ties, which provide a basis for mutual understanding and friendship.

The event also featured a grand prize lucky draw, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. The Ambassador thanked the Malaysia Business Chamber in the Lao PDR, Redwood Hotel, and Crowne Plaza Vientiane for their support in making the event a success.

The screening was part of the Malaysian Embassy's broader initiative to promote its cultural heritage in Lao PDR, reinforcing the friendship and cooperation between the two nations as they commemorate six decades of diplomatic relations.
