Manila: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) aims to enforce strict speed limits and safety measures on expressways by increasing the visibility of deputized enforcers. LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, highlighted the importance of 'maximum visibility' of enforcers to curb overspeeding.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mendoza stated that the mere presence of expressway enforcers encourages motorists to adhere to speed limits. He noted that in the past, there has been a noticeable lack of enforcers, especially in critical areas of expressways.
Mendoza emphasized the need for active monitoring and a real-time response to road safety violations, particularly overspeeding. He questioned the current practice of waiting for violators at the exit, suggesting that this approach might not prevent accidents occurring between the point of detection and the exit.
Data from the Philippine National Police - Highway Patrol Group revealed that over 31,000 road accidents were recorded in 2024, with 13 percent happening on expressways. Mendoza pointed out that nearly all expressway accidents were fatal, underscoring the necessity for enhanced enforcement measures.
He urged deputized enforcers to fulfill their obligation to ensure the safety of all expressway users, stressing the shared responsibility to protect motorists and prevent accidents.
