Lao PDR Reaffirms Commitment to Early Childhood Development

Tunis:Lao PDR The Ministry of Education and Sports, the Lao Women's Union, UNICEF, and the Australian Government have renewed their commitment to enhancing early childhood development, school readiness, and family care. This dedication was emphasized during a policy dialogue reviewing the achievements and future plans of two significant programs in Laos.

According to Lao News Agency, the dialogue centered on the programs "All Children Learning Supporting Lao Children to be Ready for School and Stay in School" and "Happy Families Grow Together Love and Care for Every Child." These initiatives underscore the importance of coordinated support for children at home, in communities, and in schools.

The meeting featured key figures such as Ms. Chompheng Vongsa from the Department of Early Childhood Education, Ms. Viengmaly Dalakone from the Lao Women's Union, Mr. Michael Currie of the Australian Embassy, and Ms. Magali Romedenne from UNICEF Lao PDR. Ms. Romedenne highlighted that early childhood development and education are crucial for children to reach their full potential, beginning long before primary school through care, play, and parental relationships.

The programs have collectively benefited 16,400 children in pre-primary education and community-based school readiness, while nearly 1,500 educators and community facilitators have received training. Overall, 84,690 individuals, including parents and community members, have been positively impacted.

UNICEF and the Government of Lao PDR are preparing to implement a new Country Programme for 2027-2031, reinforcing early childhood as foundational for health and learning. The initiative aligns with Lao PDR's economic transition and impending graduation from Least Developed Country status, highlighting the long-term benefits of investing in early childhood.

UNICEF also expressed gratitude to its partners, celebrating its 80th anniversary with a commemorative stamp to mark the 50th anniversary of UNICEF Lao PDR, acknowledging the ongoing support for children's development in the region.
