Iligan city: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Monday condemned the brutal beating of a nine-year-old Grade 3 student in Iligan City, stating that the alleged involvement of high school students reflects the worsening violence committed by minors. The child is now confined in an intensive care unit after reportedly being attacked by older students.
According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian described the incident as 'disturbing' and a 'wake-up call' for families, schools, and communities to address youth violence. He expressed concern over the involvement of high school students, questioning where the values of good manners and respect have gone, which should be nurtured by the family, school, and community.
Gatchalian called on local authorities to apprehend those involved and ensure that justice is served without delay. He also urged the Department of Education and school officials to intensify interventions against bullying, gang activity, and other behavioral problems in schools. The senator emphasized that preventing youth violence requires a united effort from families, schools, and communities to model respect, instill compassion, and uphold discipline.
In a public hearing last April 8, Gatchalian raised alarm over what he described as the worsening incidents of bullying and violence in Philippine schools. He cited international assessments that have repeatedly ranked the country highest in bullying cases among more than 70 nations. Despite previous inquiries and the passage of relevant laws, such as the Mental Health in Basic Education Act, he noted that the problem persists.
Gatchalian also expressed concern over the trend of students recording and uploading bullying incidents, warning that it could cause lasting harm to victims and normalize aggressive behavior among youth.
