Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced that the automated election system (AES) slated for use in the upcoming May 12 national and local elections has received official certification. This certification confirms that the AES can function "properly, securely, and accurately."
According to Philippines News Agency, the certification was granted by the Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC), marking the final step required for the complete implementation of automated elections. The TEC's approval encompasses the Full Automation System with Transparency Audit/Count, Secure Electronic Transmission Services, and the Online Voting and Counting System.
The Comelec explained that the certification of the modernized election system was based on recommendations from Pro V and V, an international certification entity engaged by the poll body and sanctioned by its advisory council.
During a briefing, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia expressed hope that the TEC certification would address concerns from critics of the AES. "I hope we can give this process a chance," Garcia stated. He also urged stakeholders to remain vigilant to protect the interests of voters.
Garcia emphasized, "Let's continue to observe, criticize until election day, but make sure that our voters will be able to vote. Let's make sure no one is disenfranchised, everyone can vote and all votes will be counted."
