Vientiane:China's Global Governance Initiative (GGI), launched by President Xi Jinping in September 2025, has been gaining traction as it enters its second year, with Laos expressing strong support. The initiative is part of China's broader approach to international cooperation and aims to adapt multilateral institutions to contemporary challenges.
According to Lao News Agency, the GGI builds on five core principles sovereign equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and taking real actions. These principles align with the United Nations' goals and emphasize representation, inclusion, fairness, and effectiveness in global governance.
Laos has shown particular interest in the GGI, with President Thongloun Sisoulith affirming the country's support during his visit to China in 2025. Laos views the initiative as an opportunity to enhance its role in the international system, particularly as a member of ASEAN and a developing nation. The GGI's focus on development priorities and multilateral engagement resonates with Lao foreign policy.
The initiative's first year saw significant international engagement, with nearly 160 countries and organizations expressing support. The GGI has encouraged discussions within established multilateral settings, such as the United Nations, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, emphasizing the Global South's voice.
Laos' involvement extends to emerging areas like artificial intelligence. On July 16, 2026, Laos became a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, highlighting its commitment to contributing to international governance discussions.
As the GGI progresses into its second year, its success will depend on transforming principles into practical outcomes and ensuring complementarity with existing multilateral mechanisms. For Laos, this presents an opportunity to strengthen its engagement with ASEAN and other international bodies, contributing to a more inclusive and responsive global governance system.
