Laos and Australia Conclude Project Enhancing Business Opportunities for Women and Persons with Disabilities

Vientiane:The Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Laos, in partnership with Australia, has concluded a significant project aimed at supporting women and persons with disabilities in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR). The initiative focused on the development of One District One Product (ODOP) goods, improving packaging, and expanding online sales.

According to Lao News Agency, the closing ceremony took place in Vientiane on October 21. It was organized by the Industry, Commerce and Energy Institute under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, in collaboration with the Regional Trade for Development (RT4D) program.

The event was co-chaired by Minister of Industry and Commerce Malaithong Kommasith and Australian Ambassador to the Lao PDR Megan Jones. Attendees included project representatives, entrepreneurs, members of the Handicraft Group for Persons with Disabilities from Pak Ou District, Luang Prabang Province, and officials from the Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion.

During the ceremony, Mr. Malaithong emphasized the project's assessment of challenges faced by women and persons with disabilities. This assessment has provided a foundation for the development of more inclusive business promotion policies for the ministry and Luang Prabang Province.

The initiative has also facilitated improvements in product packaging to meet relevant standards, helped entrepreneurs understand the ODOP trademark application process, and built the skills and confidence needed for online product marketing.

Mr. Malaithong acknowledged the project's role in transforming women and persons with disabilities from mere recipients of aid into business owners and active participants in local economic development. He urged government agencies, development partners, businesses, and local entrepreneurs to evaluate the project's successes, identify any remaining challenges, and share insights to inform future initiatives.

The closing ceremony served as a platform for stakeholders to review the project's accomplishments and explore ways to maintain its benefits, enhance inclusive entrepreneurship, and broaden economic opportunities for women and persons with disabilities in Laos.
