Government and UNICEF Strengthen Efforts for Child Health in Lao PDR

Savannakhet:The Government of Lao PDR and UNICEF have reinforced their commitment to ensuring a healthy start for every child in the country, following a significant three-day visit to Savannakhet Province from October 20 to 21.

According to Lao News Agency, the visit was led by Mr. Soulivath Souvannachoumkham, Deputy Minister of Finance, and Ms. Magali Romedenne, UNICEF Deputy Representative to the Lao PDR. They were accompanied by senior officials from various national ministries, the Lao Women's Union, and local authorities from Savannakhet province and district.

Mr. Soulivath Souvannachoumkham emphasized the importance of investing in children's health as a future investment for Lao PDR. He noted the visit's role in providing firsthand insights into how policy and budget decisions translate into services for families. The delegation engaged with Village Health Volunteers, health workers, and families to understand community-based initiatives like growth monitoring, malnutrition treatment, and the Lao Women's Union's parenting programme.

The Government's allocation for national nutrition spending saw a more than twofold increase from 2020 to 2022, yet challenges persist. The Lao Social Indicator Survey III (2023) highlights that one in three children under five is stunted, and 11 percent are wasted. Discussions during the visit focused on effective resource utilization and strengthening coordination across health, nutrition, and social services.

As part of their upcoming 2027-2031 Country Programme of Cooperation, both the Government and UNICEF aim to integrate policy, financing, and services to ensure that every child has the opportunity to survive, thrive, and achieve their full potential.
