Salavan:The Government of Japan has allocated a grant of US$108,610 to enhance access to clean water for residents in three villages of Lakhonepheng District, Salavan Province. This initiative is part of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP).
According to Lao News Agency, the project involves extending the water distribution pipeline from the existing supply system to the villages of Naphabang Nhai, Natham, and Naphabang Noy. This extension aims to provide better access to safe and clean water for the residents.
The grant contract was signed by Japanese Ambassador to Laos, Koizumi Tsutomu, alongside a representative from the provincial authorities, with Daovong Phonekeo, Secretary of the Salavan Provincial Party Committee, in attendance. Currently, the central areas of Lakhonepheng District have a water supply system, but the three targeted villages remain unconnected, leading residents to depend on deep wells and rainwater.
The project will facilitate the extension of treated water supplies from the existing water treatment plant to these villages. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has also supported efforts to maintain a safe and reliable water supply. Ambassador Koizumi expressed hope that the project would significantly improve living conditions and sanitation within the beneficiary communities.
Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects focuses on small-scale initiatives that directly benefit local communities, fostering economic and social development in developing countries, including Laos. The Japanese government has already invested over US$2.035 million in Salavan Province for healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. Japan remains committed to supporting grassroots initiatives to improve living standards and reduce regional socio-economic disparities across Laos, ensuring that 'no one is left behind.'
