PM Urges Luang Namtha to Strengthen Security and Sustainable Development

Vientiane: Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone called on Party and government committees at all levels in Luang Namtha Province to strengthen political stability, accelerate socio-economic development and improve people's livelihoods during his working visit to the province on August 18, 2026.

According to Lao News Agency, the Prime Minister urged authorities to step up efforts to combat online scams and drug-related problems, accelerate UXO clearance, and strengthen grassroots political foundations. He emphasized the need for effective implementation of the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan, with a focus on building an independent and self-reliant economy to reduce dependence on imports. The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of rural development, poverty reduction, improved public finance and investment efficiency, and stricter management of mineral resources.

Further priorities outlined by Prime Minister Sonexay included improving education and healthcare, strengthening disaster preparedness, developing vocational and workforce skills, formalizing foreign labor management, and deepening cooperation with neighboring countries to attract investment and development assistance.

Provincial Party Secretary and People's Council President Lt. Gen. Khamking Phouylamanivong reported that Luang Namtha maintained political stability and economic growth. During the first six months of 2026, the province collected more than 2.21 trillion kip in budget revenue, reaching 58.4% of the annual target. The province also expanded agricultural production, including sugarcane and natural rubber, while improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare services.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Sonexay handed over financial assistance and relief supplies to provincial authorities to support recovery from recent flooding.
