Vientiane: Mittaphab Hospital officially launched the 'Following the Footsteps of the Buddha' project on May 4, 2026, providing knee and hip replacement surgeries for underprivileged patients across the Lao PDR. The opening ceremony was attended by Bounserth Keopasert, Vice Minister of Health; Sonexay Lathsavong, Director of Mittaphab Hospital; and Krongkanit Rakcharoen, Ambassador of Thailand to the Lao PDR. Also in attendance was Kirati Chareancholvanich, Chairman of the project, along with Thai medical specialists and Lao healthcare personnel.

According to Lao News Agency, the project will run from May 4 to May 7, focusing on patients suffering from severe knee and hip degeneration who cannot afford treatment. Officials say the initiative aims to restore mobility and improve quality of life, allowing patients to walk again and return to daily activities.

Project leaders say the initiative also serves as a platform for strengthening cooperation between Lao and Thai medical professionals. They say the collaboration enables knowledge sharing and skills transfer, helping improve the capabilities of local healthcare providers.

During the four-day program, medical teams from both countries are working together using modern equipment and internationally recognized medical standards to ensure patient safety and support faster recovery. Officials say the project highlights the growing partnership between Laos and Thailand in advancing healthcare services and expanding access to essential medical treatment.
