Manila: Five members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) surrendered with their weapons in Maguindanao del Sur on Wednesday, marking another victory for the military's peace initiative in Central Mindanao. The group, led by Muhamidin Panegas, pledged allegiance to the Philippine flag at the 48th Infantry Battalion headquarters in Datu Salibo town. They turned over five high-powered firearms, including a .50-caliber rifle, to Lt. Col. Kenny Rae Tizon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Panegas expressed that laying down their arms peacefully had been a long-time aspiration, allowing them to reunite with their families and loved ones by embracing peace. Tizon credited the "whole-of-nation approach" as a key factor in persuading the rebels to surrender, highlighting the success of collaborative efforts in promoting peace.
The surrender is part of a broader trend in the region, with more than 1,000 firearms being yielded in Central Mindanao since January. This development reflects ongoing efforts to stabilize the area and reduce armed conflict through peaceful negotiations and community engagement.
