Vientiane: Vietnam and Laos are enhancing their cooperative efforts to bolster border security, with a focus on combatting cross-border drug trafficking and human trafficking. Minister of National Defence Sen. Lt. Gen. Khamlieng Outhakaysone urged the Vietnam Border Guard High Command and the Border Guard High Command of the Lao People’s Army to intensify their coordination in addressing these critical issues, which threaten the stability along their shared border.
According to Lao News Agency, Khamlieng underscored the significance of a recent meeting with a delegation from the Vietnam Border Guard High Command, led by Commander Lt. Gen. Le Duc Thai. The meeting, held in Vientiane, serves to further solidify the friendship and cooperation between the two countries. He highlighted that strong defence ties are crucial for maintaining peace, stability, and social order along the Vietnam-Laos border.
During the discussions, Khamlieng proposed enhancing cooperation mechanisms between their armies, focusing on agriculture, crop cultivation, and livestock raising. He emphasized the importance of regular high-level exchanges and reciprocal visits to foster mutual trust and solidarity. Lt. Gen. Thai echoed these sentiments, noting that the visit aimed to deepen collaboration between the two border guard forces and consolidate the unique solidarity between the armies and people of both nations.
The bilateral talks also reviewed recent cooperation achievements, noting regular meetings and delegation exchanges between the border guard forces. These interactions have yielded positive results, including the provision of technical equipment, military supplies, and medical materials. Joint celebrations and visits on significant national and military anniversaries have further strengthened ties.
Both sides acknowledged the success of joint patrols in enhancing security and mutual trust along the border. These efforts have also played a role in educating younger generations about the importance of the Vietnam-Laos friendship and solidarity. A cooperation plan was agreed upon for the coming period, with drug prevention and control identified as a key focus area.
The talks concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Comprehensive Cooperation for 2025, reaffirming the commitment of the Vietnam and Laos Border Guard High Commands to deepen their practical and results-oriented cooperation.
