Vientiane: Vientiane Capital has intensified efforts to improve waste management and disposal through a new regulatory framework aimed at enhancing environmental protection, public hygiene, and sustainable urban development.
According to Lao News Agency, the newly issued decision on waste management and disposal establishes clear principles, technical standards, and responsibilities for relevant authorities, businesses, organizations, and residents in the collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of waste throughout the capital.
Under the regulation, waste management encompasses the systematic planning, monitoring, and implementation of waste control measures, beginning with waste segregation, collection, transfer, and transportation, as well as recycling, resource recovery, and environmentally sound disposal. The policy emphasizes maximizing economic value while safeguarding public health, improving urban aesthetics, and protecting the environment.
Waste disposal is defined as the safe and technically appropriate treatment or destruction of waste in accordance with environmental standards, hygiene requirements, and measures designed to protect communities and natural ecosystems.
