Vientiane Capital Achieves Five-Year Economic and Social Milestones

Vientiane: Over the past five years, Vientiane Capital has experienced steady economic growth, averaging 5.34 percent annually. By 2025, the city’s total GDP reached 89,278.8 billion kip, with an average of 85.17 million kip per capita.



According to Lao News Agency, the economic structure of Vientiane Capital has been gradually shifting. The agriculture sector’s share declined from 14.3 percent to 13 percent, while the industry sector saw a slight fall from 49.5 percent to 49 percent. In contrast, the services sector grew from 36.2 percent to 38 percent.



Comrade Anouphab Tounalom, Secretary of the Central Party Committee and Secretary of the Vientiane Capital Party Committee, presented a report to the 8th Party Congress of Vientiane Capital. He highlighted advancements in national defense and public security, noting that defense and security forces have been strengthened and modernized with a focus on disciplined citizen soldiers. Authorities effectively addressed issues such as illegal border crossings, drug-related crime, and illegal trade, contributing to the city’s political stability.



In the cultural and social domains, development efforts have focused on the national education strategy and advancing towards a knowledge-based economy. Public health services were expanded to the grassroots level, ensuring control of seasonal diseases and timely responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vientiane Capital’s achievements in public health led to its recognition as ASEAN’s second Health City.



Urban development progressed under Master Plan III, with significant infrastructure upgrades like the Vientiane-Vang Vieng expressway and the Laos-China railway. Public parks were built or renovated, and improvements in utilities enhanced urban living conditions. Environmental protection and disaster prevention were prioritized, with measures to address flooding and waste management. The capital successfully managed a severe flood threat in 2024, showcasing its disaster preparedness.
