Timber harvesting in Russia down 13.5% in 2022 – statistics

Timber logging in Russia declined by 13.5% year-on-year in 2022 in consequence of sanctions, Roslesinforg, the Russian forest inventory operator, told TASS.

“Russia harvested in total 194.6 mln cubic meters last year, which is 13.5% smaller than in 2021. One of the factors was the constraint of raw timber export from the country since the start of 202. The domestic lumber sector also faced problems with sales of finished goods in the second half of the year due to sanctions. The situation was prevented from a more significant slowdown by active exporting of products by logging operators and processors in the first half of 2022 before sanctions came into force, and by logistics configuring and initiated timber exports via friendly countries, primarily Kazakhstan, China and Turkey,” the operator said.

The sector ended the year with results being much better than predicted by certain experts. The timber sector demonstrates resilience, despite the external pressure, the operator added.
