Vatican City: Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle overtook Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin to become the bookmakers' favorite to become the new pope on the second day of the conclave on Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the odds on Tagle were down to 3-1 for William Hill, while those on Parolin were 7-2. This shift in odds reflects a significant change in the betting landscape as the conclave progresses.
Next in line were Italian cardinals Matteo Zuppi and Pierbattista Pizzaballa, both holding odds of 6-1, indicating strong support from bookmakers. Meanwhile, the odds on Ghana's Peter Turkson lengthened from 5-1 to 9-1, suggesting a decrease in his perceived chances.
French prelate Jean-Marc Aveline also saw a surge in favor, with his odds dropping from 33-1 six days ago to 18-1 now, indicating a growing belief in his potential to succeed in the conclave.
