Surigao del Sur Earthquakes Affect Over 132,000 Families


Surigao City – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has reported that a series of strong earthquakes in Surigao del Sur and neighboring provinces have affected a total of 132,615 families.



According to Philippines News Agency, this figure translates to 528,203 residents across 311 barangays in Northern Mindanao, Davao region, and Caraga.



The Office of Civil Defense clarified that the affected families include both those displaced and those not requiring evacuation. Reports of three fatalities and 48 injuries are still being verified, with two deaths in Caraga and one in the Davao region under investigation. The earthquakes have also resulted in 3,887 damaged houses across the affected regions. Furthermore, infrastructure damage in the Davao region and Caraga is estimated at PHP4.8 million. The initial quake, a magnitude 7.4 event, struck Surigao del Sur near Hinatuan town late Saturday night, followed by a magnitude 6.8 earthquake north northeast of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur early Monday.
