Manila: Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva has expressed full support for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s initiative to investigate the 15 contractors responsible for flood control projects. Villanueva asserted that this move aligns with the issues he has consistently raised during Senate hearings over the past three years.

According to Philippines News Agency, Villanueva highlighted the significance of President Marcos addressing the issue, as it adds weight to the demand for accountability, particularly concerning projects valued between PHP1 billion and PHP1.4 billion daily within the Department of Public Works and Highways flood control budget. Villanueva has already requested the Securities and Exchange Commission and relevant agencies to provide the General Information Sheets and Articles of Incorporation of the contractors identified by the President. This information, he mentioned, will help reveal the individuals behind these companies, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Villanueva emphasized the need for an impartial investigation, whether conducted by the executive or legislative branch, to hold accountable all parties involved, irrespective of their position or affiliation. He also reiterated the necessity for a comprehensive national flood control program, criticizing the current fragmented approach that lacks coordination and a long-term vision. Villanueva stressed the importance of establishing a concrete plan to prevent recurring flooding issues.

Furthermore, the Senate leader welcomed San Miguel Corp. President Ramon Ang's announcement to address Metro Manila's flooding problem at no expense to the government. Villanueva underscored the importance of coordinating such private sector initiatives with the national master plan, as it could potentially free up government resources for other urgent programs.

Villanueva concluded by emphasizing the need for accountability and the establishment of a sustainable, long-term program to address the flooding issues effectively.
