Russia confirms Brics enlargement to be discussed at upcoming summit

The process to incorporate new member countries into the Brics will be discussed at the next summit, scheduled for August in South Africa, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday.

According to the senior Russian official, the summer’s event in the South African capital will discuss the group’s enlargement, so the approval must be endorsed by the heads of State of the member countries, the Sputnik news agency reported on Sunday. “On this issue, Peskov explained that there are certain aspects in the approaches that should be coordinated, as well as the best way to expand the economic alliance that currently bring Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa together.”

“Russia is pleased that more and more countries are showing interest in the group,” the spokesman stressed.

The Brics, currently chaired by South Africa, accounts for more than 20 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP) and 42 percent of the world’s population.

Recently, countries such as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, and Turkey, among others, have expressed interest in joining the bloc.
