Vientiane: Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, accompanied by ministers and senior officials, visited Phanam Subdistrict in Mahaxay District, Khammouane Province, to review local development and provide policy guidance on July 20, 2026. The visit was marked by a warm welcome from the Provincial Party Secretary, President of the Khammouane Provincial People's Council, and local leaders alongside district and village representatives.
According to Lao News Agency, Mahaxay District spans 1,409 square kilometers and consists of 68 villages within four subdistricts, with around 95 percent of the population engaged in agriculture and livestock production. During the first half of 2026, the district experienced a 4 percent economic growth, with an average annual per capita income of 50.3 million kip. The budget revenue surpassed 11.8 billion kip, which accounts for 55 percent of the annual target, while exports, including cement, cassava, and livestock, were valued at over US$74.4 million.
The district has made significant strides, with 99 percent of it now having all-weather road access, 95 percent telecommunications coverage, and the achievement of model health village status across all villages. Established on April 24, 2026, Phanam Subdistrict, consisting of 25 villages, has successfully completed the initial deployment of administrative resources.
During his address to local officials, Prime Minister Sonexay emphasized the importance of enhancing political and ideological education, effectively implementing Party and government policies, and strengthening institutions to improve public service delivery. He urged authorities to focus on executing the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2026-2030) and Resolution No. 04/CC, which aims to build a self-reliant and independent economy by promoting commercial agriculture, expanding investments, and simplifying administrative procedures.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the necessity of intensifying efforts against drug trafficking, theft, fraud, and cybercrime through stronger law enforcement and public awareness campaigns. He called on district leaders to lead by example, uphold accountability, and adhere strictly to Party discipline and state regulations.
Concluding his visit, Prime Minister Sonexay provided financial assistance to support the district's development priorities and donated essential consumer goods to improve the livelihoods of local residents.
