Manila: The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW): The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) on Thursday urged voters to choose gender-sensitive candidates who would lead with empathy, act with accountability, and govern with equality in mind.
According to Philippines News Agency, in a public message, PCW Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla said gender-sensitive candidates can be easily identified through their actions, which are filled with respect, regard for the vulnerable, support for development programs, advancement for equal opportunity, and resolve to advocate gender equality.
"A candidate who shows respect is inclusive and uses no abusive words; does not make insult to women a laughing stock; and has respect for society members who are left behind," she said.
Valdeavilla emphasized that women, persons with disabilities, and the hopeless must be consulted, particularly when creating projects for advancement or development. Policies on education, health, livelihood, and safety of women and the vulnerable must also be supported, she added.
She noted that gender-sensitive candidates also advocate equal opportunities in employment, public service, and leadership in all fields of life. "They stand up for gender equality, not because it is popular, but because it is right; they have the courage and principle to speak and act for the equality of women," she said.
On Thursday, the Commission on Elections Second Division disqualified Pasig congressional candidate Christian Sia from the elections due to his lewd remarks about single mothers last month. It noted that sufficient basis was found to rule that Sia violated Section 261 of the Omnibus Election Code and Section 3 of Comelec Resolution No. 11116 that prohibit discrimination against women during the campaign period.
