PH calls for ‘peaceful, orderly’ power transition in Bangladesh

MANILA: The Philippine government on Tuesday called for a ‘peaceful and orderly’ transition of power in Bangladesh, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after weeks of protests that spiraled into violence.

‘The Philippines conveys its solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and commits to efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Bangladesh,’ the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

The agency said the government is closely monitoring the developing situation in the South Asian state, where at least 700 Filipinos are residing and working.

‘The Philippine Embassy in Dhaka and the entire government stand ready to assist Filipinos affected by the on-going political developments in the country,’ the agency said.

The DFA raised crisis alert level 1 in Bangladesh on Aug. 2 and reminded all Filipinos to take caution and remain indoors.

The agency also advised Filipino nationals in the country to regularly monitor the situation during this period of transition.

Hasina resigned
and reportedly fled Bangladesh on Aug. 5 as hundreds were killed over a violent crackdown on protests against quotas in government jobs.

The United Nations on Monday reported that more than 300 people, including children, were killed while over 20,000 were injured since the student-led demonstrations began in July.

While the authorities withdrew the system, fresh protests broke out in parts of capital Dhaka demanding for accountability and for Hasina to quit.
