Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday assured that he would not attempt to ‘direct’ or ‘influence’ the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) amid its investigation into anomalous flood control projects. He emphasized the independence of the ICI and its mandate to follow evidence without external influence, as he spoke to reporters at Malaca±an Palace.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos expressed his trust in the ICI’s integrity and competence to lead the investigation without interference. He encouraged the public to also trust the independent body and allow it to conduct its work thoroughly. The President stated that the ICI’s role is to follow leads, and if justified, recommend cases to the Ombudsman or the Department of Justice.

Marcos reiterated his stance of non-interference, mentioning that there is nothing to hide in the investigation. He dismissed any notion of having undue influence over the process and assured that wherever the investigation may lead, it would not be directed by his administration.

When questioned about his involvement in the flood control controversy, Marcos defended his integrity, acknowledging the opposition’s attempts to implicate him politically. He attributed such actions to political motives rather than concerns of corruption, suggesting that the opposition’s efforts are aimed at undermining his administration.

Marcos expressed confidence that any allegations against his administration would be proven to be politically motivated and lacking factual basis. He remained steadfast in his belief that the administration would demonstrate the political nature of the accusations.
