P91-M flood mitigation project in Pangasinan town completed

MALASIQUI: Residents of Barangay Caranglaan in Mabini, Pangasinan need not worry about flooding during the rainy season following the completion of the PHP91.6 million flood mitigation structure.

Mabini Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Keith Cerilo Balintos, in an interview Monday, said the town will greatly benefit from the structure since during heavy rains the Balingcaguing River overflows and floods the highway and residential areas up to three meters high.

‘Even motorists would benefit from it since the road is not passable once the river overflows. Even buses and trucks cannot pass through when the road is flooded, so it would be very helpful especially during emergencies when there is calamity,’ he said in Filipino.

Department of Public Works and Highways Ilocos Region information officer Esperanza Tinaza, in a statement, said the 410-meter project was started last February 12 and was completed on April 23.

‘The construction of this efficient water drainage system and fl
ood mitigation structure in Barangay Caranglaan is anticipated to significantly benefit the community in numbers of ways, including the decreased negative effects of flood, increased protection for safety and well-being, economic advantages, and environmental preservation,’ she said.
