Northern Samar eyes BPO investments

TACLOBAN CITY: The Northern Samar provincial government is positioning the province as a potential business processing and outsourcing (BPO) investment destination to create job opportunities in the province.

Jhon Allen Berbon, head of the provincial economic development and investment promotions office (PEDIPO), said in a phone interview Thursday attracting BPO investments is timely since there is an ongoing improvement in mobile and broadband services through the new cell sites built by Globe.

‘Residents and businesses can anticipate reliable and high-speed internet connectivity. We are also in the process of preparing the compliance of Catarman town to the scorecards as a Smart City,’ Berbon said.

A Smart City is a brand given to a city or town that has undergone and has completed the digital roadmap as required by the Digital Cities Program of the Department of Information and Communications Technology. This program aims to transform various cities across the country into thriving hubs for digital inno
vation, attracting investments and creating job opportunities for Filipinos.

Berbon said Globe works with TowerCos to put up new cell sites in Northern Samar.

‘This expansion is part of Globe’s commitment to meeting the data requirements of emerging industries such as BPO companies that are looking to locate in the province,’ he said.

Northern Samar PEDIPO joins the 8th Contact Islands 2024 conference at the Fili Hotel in Nustar Cebu upon an invitation by the Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) as part of positioning itself as a potential BPO destination.

The event, held July 24 to 26, gathers over 600 BPO executives, government agencies, and local government units to address industry challenges such as cybersecurity, infrastructure, workforce upskilling, taxation uncertainties, AI, and macroeconomic conditions.

“The event will provide the province with a platform to present Northern Samar as a viable location for the BPO company expansion,” Berbon said.

Governor Edwin Ongchuan and key
officials from Northern Samar met earlier this month with CCAP chairperson Mitch Locsin to discuss opportunities in the province.
