Luang Prabang Prepares for Traditional Fire Boat Festival


Luang Prabang:The city is getting ready for the annual Boun Ork Phansa Pavarana and Lai Heua Fai (Fire Boat) Festival, set to occur from October 24-26, 2026. This event will include a variety of traditional, cultural, and tourism activities.



According to Lao News Agency, a consultative meeting was held on September 30 at Luang Prabang City Hall to discuss preparations for the festival. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Saveuy Silavanh, Mayor of Luang Prabang City, and included representatives from provincial departments, city sub-committees, schools, and villages involved in constructing the traditional fire boats.



During the meeting, participants reviewed the assignment of responsibilities to various sub-committees and received updates on preparations for the Boun Ork Phansa Pavarana, That Chomsy Stupa Worship Festival, and Lai Heua Fai celebrations. The emphasis was on preserving the traditional customs of Luang Prabang.



The festival will feature a three-day program that includes the Great Mahachat Sermon, worship activities at That Chomsy Stupa, traditional performances, illuminated displays, and lantern lighting at temples. A key highlight is the traditional fire boat competition.



The event aims to preserve Buddhist and local traditions, boost domestic tourism, generate income for local communities, and showcase the artistic skills and craftsmanship of Luang Prabang residents. Authorities are also focusing on maintaining public safety, security, and order throughout the celebrations.



Mayor Saveuy urged all sub-committees to strengthen coordination and fulfill their responsibilities with high commitment to ensure the festival is vibrant, peaceful, and safe, thereby attracting more domestic and international visitors to Luang Prabang.
