LGU cautions public vs. donation drives after Mt. Kanlaon eruption

DUMAGUETE CITY: The local government unit (LGU) of Canlaon City, Negros Oriental on Thursday warned the public against private donation drives for displaced residents following Monday’s eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.

In a statement posted on its Salta Canlaon official Facebook page, the city said it is not involved in any way with donation campaigns, adding that enough resources are coming from the government.

‘The LGU, together with the provincial, regional, and national agencies, particularly the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Region 7 (DSWD-7), has sufficient resources to address the needs of the affected residents,’ it said.

‘Our collaborative efforts ensure that relief and support are adequately provided to those in need’.

The city government called on the public to channel their donations through its Incident Command Center to avoid misuse and warned that some persons may take advantage of the current situation.

Work suspension

On its third day since the explosive eruption of Mt. Kanlao
n Monday night, Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas issued another executive order, again suspending work in government and private offices indefinitely.

Meanwhile, residents of five villages within the four-kilometer radius danger zone have returned to their homes and farms, said Adrian Sedillo, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

Citing the latest situational report, Sedillo said roads and bridges are still passable, power and communications are operational, and no damage to houses and infrastructures was reported.

The Department of Agriculture, meanwhile, and its local counterpart, have to assess the damage to crops, livestock, and farms that were covered with ash and other volcanic material following the eruption.

In an interview with the Philippine News Agency on Thursday, Gov. Manuel Sagarbarria said he ordered PDRRMO to deploy manpower and logistics to Canlaon in response to the request of the mayor.

Alert Level 2 remains hoisted as the volcano is still exhibiti
ng unusual activity.

Sagarbarria said the province will also be sending more food packs while the DSWD-7 has also committed to do the same in the coming days.
