Vientiane:The National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic plans to review 32 draft laws in 2027, comprising two new laws and 30 amendments. This decision follows a review of the assembly's legislative work, oversight activities, and international cooperation during 2026.
According to Lao News Agency, these plans were outlined during the ongoing second ordinary session of the 10th National Assembly on October 12, where the legislature's achievements and future priorities were discussed.
In 2026, the National Assembly conducted inaugural and extraordinary sessions, adopting crucial resolutions regarding the state budget, monetary policy, rural development, and poverty reduction. It also restructured its organization according to Party directives to enhance administrative efficiency.
The assembly's legislative efforts included the approval of the State Treasury Law and the revised State Budget Law. Additionally, it ratified international agreements on cross-border transit, mutual legal assistance, and tax cooperation.
Oversight was strengthened in areas such as public services, disaster response, and citizens' complaints. Over 1.1 billion kip was allocated for emergency aid to ten provinces affected by flooding, and the assembly's secretariat handled numerous public petitions.
Internationally, the National Assembly engaged in nearly 50 external activities and participated in forums like the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
For 2027, the assembly aims to enhance scrutiny of socio-economic policies, the National Agenda on poverty reduction, major infrastructure projects, and government regulations. It also intends to address 30% of unresolved public grievance cases.
Vientiane is set to host the 18th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Caucus in 2027, offering a platform to boost regional parliamentary cooperation.
Parliamentary leaders emphasized the need for stronger coordination among the government, the National Assembly, and provincial People's Councils to tackle economic challenges, improve governance, and ensure legislation benefits the public and promotes sustainable development.
