Laos: the country is bracing for significant changes in its weather patterns during the 2026 rainy season due to El Niño conditions. Forecasted to occur between May and July, these conditions are expected to result in below-average rainfall and higher than usual temperatures, causing concern among authorities and residents alike. According to Lao News Agency, the notice issued on May 11, 2026, highlights the potential for temperatures in some areas to soar between 35-38 degrees Celsius. This is expected to be accompanied by irregular rainfall patterns, extended dry periods, and reduced water levels in certain parts of the nation. While some regions might experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, the overall distribution of rainfall is anticipated to be uneven. This could elevate the risks of drought, water shortages, forest fires, and agricultural and livestock damage. As the El Niño conditions are expected to moderate from August to September 2026, weather fluctuations could still pose threats such a s storms, flash floods, landslides, and localized flooding in various provinces. In response to these potential threats, the ministry has urged local authorities and the public to take precautionary measures. These include preparing water storage systems, safeguarding agricultural activities, staying updated with weather forecasts, and enhancing disaster prevention strategies to mitigate the impacts on lives and property.
