Vientiane: The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has issued a warning about potential flash floods and landslides in several provinces on September 1-2, 2026.
According to Lao News Agency, the alert comes as a result of a low-pressure trough or rain belt moving across northern Laos, alongside the southwest monsoon. This weather pattern is expected to cause thunderstorms nationwide, with some areas possibly experiencing heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The provinces identified as high-risk areas include Xaysomboun Province, specifically Thathom, Longsan, and Hom districts; Vientiane Province with a focus on Kasi and Vang Vieng; Borikhamxay in the Viengthong area; Khammouan, covering Boualapha, Khounkham, Nakai, and Yommalath; and Savannakhet, particularly in Phon, Sepon, Champhone, Thapangthong, Vilabouly, Chonburi, and Nong.
In southern Laos, vulnerable areas have been identified in Saravane, including Ta-oy, Lao Nga, Saravane, Lakhonepheng, and Vapi districts; Champasak, covering Bachiangchalensuk, Paksong, Sanasomboun, and Thapangthong; Sekong, especially Kalum and Dakchung; and Attapeu in the districts of Sanxay, Phouvong, and Sanamxay.
The department has urged residents, local authorities, and relevant organizations within these regions to stay alert, closely monitor weather forecasts and water levels, and implement necessary precautions to safeguard against possible flooding and landslides.
