Laos Hosts Workshop to Set Priorities for GEF-9 Environmental Efforts


Vientiane:The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment convened the Asia GEF-9 Planning Workshop in Vientiane on September 29, 2026. The workshop aimed to discuss the priorities and planning for the ninth replenishment cycle of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-9).



According to Lao News Agency, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Xaynakhone Inthavong chaired the event, which saw the participation of officials in charge of project development, operations, and policy. Representatives from international organizations, development partners, and civil society also attended.



Mr. Xaynakhone emphasized the significance of GEF-9 in supporting environmental and climate actions across Asia. The GEF-9 cycle has received pledges amounting to US$3.9 billion from donor countries, demonstrating ongoing international backing for multilateral environmental cooperation.



The discussions at the workshop focused on aligning Lao PDR’s priorities under GEF-9 with its national development and environmental strategies. These include the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan, the National Adaptation Plan, and the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.



Key areas of focus highlighted during the workshop were sustainable forestry, climate-resilient agriculture, water, energy and food security in the Mekong Basin, and the environmentally sound management of hazardous waste.



Participants shared insights on policy priorities, programs, blended financing, and country-group planning. The goal was to exchange experiences, enhance capacity, and support the effective implementation of GEF-9 projects.
