Vientiane: Strengthening news analysis and critical reporting is essential for improving the quality and credibility of Lao media in the digital era, Vannasin Simmavong, Director General of the Lao News Agency (KPL), said at the First National Media Conference, on 14 July.

According to Lao News Agency, Vannasin presented a paper titled "Upgrading News Analysis and Criticism to a New Quality," emphasizing that quality journalism should extend beyond reporting events by explaining their causes, impacts, and implications. This approach enables the public to better understand complex issues.

He highlighted the growing importance of analytical journalism in combating misinformation, aiding audiences in distinguishing verified information from fake news, identifying attempts to manipulate public opinion, and developing critical thinking based on evidence and facts.

Vannasin pointed out that improving analytical reporting requires more than new presentation techniques. It entails stronger professional ethics, deeper subject knowledge, scientific thinking, reliable data, and greater use of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence.

He acknowledged that Lao media has played an important role in promoting Party and State policies, educating the public, and responding to misinformation. Unlike some media systems, Lao journalism aims not only to report events but also to guide public understanding in support of national development.

To bolster analytical journalism, Vannasin called for systematic investment in journalist training, digital technology, data access, and professional ethics, as well as closer cooperation among media organizations, government agencies, and academic institutions.

He stated that building a credible and transparent information ecosystem is a shared responsibility that will contribute to informed public debate and the country's long-term development.
