Sibalom: The Sibalom Water District (SWD) is set to provide its hydrants as water sources during emergencies, particularly in the event of earthquakes. SWD General Manager Jonathan De Gracia announced in an interview that six strategically located water hydrants would be accessible to supply water during critical situations such as fires or mass casualties in hospitals.
According to Philippines News Agency, De Gracia emphasized that water from these hydrants would be offered free of charge during emergencies. This initiative is part of SWD’s broader strategy to enhance emergency preparedness for incidents like earthquakes, which have historically impacted the region.
The collaboration between the local government unit of Sibalom and the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) during the health pandemic was highlighted by De Gracia. This partnership facilitated the distribution of water to households outside the usual coverage areas, demonstrating the hydrants’ utility beyond their primary function.
In a related online press conference, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), Office of Civil Defense, and the Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office urged local government units and communities to remain prepared for potential earthquakes. Phivolcs geologist Jeffrey Perez noted that Antique is susceptible to seismic activity due to the West Panay Fault, underscoring the importance of readiness given the historic earthquakes in the region in 1948 and 1990.
