‘Healthy competition’ among MC taxi players to benefit riding public

MANILA: Senator Grace Poe on Wednesday said the entry of new motorcycle taxi (MC taxi) players in the transport industry will promote “healthy competition” and provide commuters with more affordable and convenient options, particularly in congested areas.

Poe issued the statement following the recent announcement of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) that it has approved the operation of four more MC taxi players.

“This is exactly why we have always pushed for the legalization of MC taxis. With more competition, commuters have access to fast, affordable, and convenient transport options, especially in traffic jams or harder-to-reach destinations,” she said.

The legalization of MC taxis, Poe said, aligns with public demand and data, prompting calls for updated public policy and legislation.

She said the ultimate goal is to improve livelihoods and facilitate easier commutes for all, with the hope of passing the legalization bill before the end of the current congressional term
in 2025.

Now that the MC taxi technical working group has concluded its study, Poe is convinced that motorcycle taxi is a feasible alternative mode of transport “as long as proper road and passenger safety measures are in place.”

“The final study gives supporting data for the expansion of the industry, not just for new players but also wider operations in the country,” she said.

The LTFRB is set to draft its recommendation to the Congress on the operation of MC taxis based on the said study.
