Busan: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared a firm stance against corruption, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to reducing the involvement of government workers in corrupt activities.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos, in an interview following the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Busan, South Korea, acknowledged the persistent challenge of corruption within large bureaucracies. He noted that while eliminating corruption entirely might be unrealistic, efforts are underway to make it increasingly difficult for officials and employees to engage in corrupt practices.

Marcos highlighted the government’s strategy to tighten systems and procedures, thereby reducing the opportunities for corrupt activities. He explained that by making it progressively harder for individuals to exploit the system, the number of those engaging in corruption would decrease. He emphasized that combating corruption is an ongoing process rather than a one-time solution.

A significant measure introduced by the government is the reduction of project costs within the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), which came after reports of overpriced construction materials. Marcos stated that this move is aimed at decreasing bureaucratic red tape and ensuring efficient spending within the agency. He commended DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon for his efforts to achieve savings and enhance the agency’s financial efficiency.

Marcos also expressed confidence in Congress’s role in ensuring that the proposed 2026 national budget is both effective and free from irregularities.
