DSWD program beneficiaries get P1.8M to start food-related projects

LEGAZPI: At least four Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) associations in Sorsogon province have been granted a PHP1.8-million seed capital by the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Bicol (DSWD-5).

In an interview on Tuesday, Ram Joseph Zaragoza, DSWD-Bicol SLP spokesperson, said each association, consisting of 30 members, received on Monday a livelihood grant of PHP450,000 for their approved projects on food production, such as pili products making, food vending, rice retailing, sewing, and egg farming.

“The projects will benefit 120 members who are the direct beneficiaries of the project. Also expected as the indirect beneficiaries were the community and neighboring villages that will be prioritized as consumers from the output of the livelihood projects,” he said.

He said the SLP-organized groups have undergone program orientation, and capacity-building activities as part of the preparation for the implementation phase.

“The members will utilize the grants to construct facilities, purchase
equipment, and acquire raw materials needed for their livelihood projects. The associations are expected to utilize the grants by their project proposals effectively,” he said.

The SLP is a capability-building program of the DSWD with the objective of improving the abilities of the poor to advance in life by providing them with appropriate assistance.

Zaragoza said it ensures that the beneficiaries will have the financial resources and necessary skills for the establishment and sustainability of their livelihood.
