Bicol: The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Bicol (DSWD-5) has extended assistance to associations in conflict-vulnerable communities and families affected by fire in the region from May 5 to 8.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD-5 Director Norman Laurio stated that a total of PHP2.166 million in combined financial and emergency relief assistance has been provided through the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) for conflict-vulnerable areas and the Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD).
'At least seven SLP associations from Camarines Norte received seed capital of PHP300,000 each, a total of PHP2.1 million. The SLPs, with over 150 members, will establish agricultural and food-related livelihoods across the province that will help sustain income and livelihood for their members and families,' Laurio explained.
The food-related livelihood initiatives include rice and feed retailing enterprises, poultry production projects, a general merchandise and agricultural supply store, and a community store.
Laurio added that the DSWD Bicol and its partners continue to promote self-sufficiency, economic progress, and livelihood resilience among Bicolanos in conflict-vulnerable communities. "The Department prioritizes empowering agricultural livelihoods as a means to strengthen food security in the region and beyond. These efforts align with the directives of DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian and the socio-economic agenda of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr," he said.
Meanwhile, the agency has already provided more than PHP66,000 in aid to nine families affected by fire across Bicol. The DSWD's DRMD personnel distributed food packs and non-food relief items, which included hygiene kits, family kits, kitchen kits, and sleeping kits.
Laurio also mentioned that the Department's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations program will provide PHP10,000 in financial assistance to support the families' recovery and rebuilding efforts. DSWD Bicol is coordinating with local government units and other agencies to ensure that the needs of affected families are met.
