DepEd okays use of Teacher’s Camp road to ease Baguio traffic

BAGUIO: Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte has granted the local government unit’s request, allowing motorists access to Teachers’ Camp’s road during the holidays.

In a letter sent to the city government, Duterte approved the request for the reuse of the camp’s inner road to ease traffic congestion on major thoroughfares as pepole flock to the summer capital to celebrate Christmas, Aileen Refuerzo, City’s Information officer, said in an interview on Friday.

The camp’s road will be accessible to motorists from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends until January 13.

In 2022, DepEd allowed access to the camp’s road and spared motorists from monstrous traffic experienced in areas where popular tourist attractions are located. The same was also allowed during the last summer vacation.

Traversing Teacher’s Camp Road that connects South Drive road to Leonard Wood Road, motorists will be spared from going as far as Ilusorio Drive near the Baguio C
ountry Club, the Pacdal Circle, and even the Botanical Garden Area, all bottleneck areas and have frequent long queues.

People usually flock to these areas to visit tourist attractions like the Baguio Country Christmas Village, Wright Park, the Mansion, Mines View Park, the Botanical Garden, and the favorite souvenir shopping area – the Good Shepherd Convent on Gibraltar Road.

As early as Dec. 15, many streets of Baguio City have been experiencing heavy traffic even after thousands of students were already on a Christmas break. They were replaced by tourists who opted to celebrate Christmas in the summer capital.

The city government expects an average daily number of tourists at 80,000.

The DepEd’s approval was subject to close monitoring by policemen to ensure the safety and security of the premises, the motorists and pedestrians entering the area.

The Teacher’s Camp, which is directly under the education department, is the site of the National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP), which is the a
gency’s training arm.
