Dabawenyos warned vs. leptospirosis this rainy season

DAVAO CITY: The City Health Office (CHO) here released a bulletin on Monday warning about the danger of leptospirosis during the rainy season.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by bacteria that affects people and animals and is spread in infected animals’ urine.

The health office noted that leptospirosis risk often increases during flooding when people come into contact with contaminated water or soil. Symptoms include fever, headache, body and muscle aches, red eyes, and stomach pain.

‘In severe cases, the liver, kidney, and even the brain will be affected,’ the CHO said.

Apart from floodwaters, the disease can also be acquired from contaminated water sources.

‘If you have a wound and are in contact with contaminated water, the incubation period of the bacteria is seven to 10 days,’ the CHO said in their bulletin.

CHO urged residents to avoid swimming, wading, or putting their heads in floodwaters or contaminated water.

‘If it is unavoidable to wade in floodwaters, you must wear protective clothing li
ke footwear and gloves. Make sure that your houses are free from rats and maintain its cleanliness,’ it said.

The CHO also advised residents to go to the nearest clinics or hospitals if any symptoms occur.
